3 Healthy Thanksgiving Tips for a Smile-Friendly Holiday

Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on what is important to each of us and what we have to be grateful for in our lives. At O’Connor Dental Care, Dr. O’Connor and Dr. Emily are thankful for the opportunity to provide quality dentistry to our patients and their families. Thanksgiving is also a time when we can consume up to 4,500 calories in a day while enjoying the delicious dinner with our friends and family. Here are a few tips to help keep your teeth healthy while enjoying the holiday!

1. Brush, Floss, and Rinse

Keep your toothbrush and floss nearby while enjoying your meal. To remove some of the food particles that may remain on your teeth as you snack all day, try to brush at least two to three times during the day.

 

2. Drink Water Throughout the Day

As you continue to eat food throughout the day, your saliva does not have a chance to keep your teeth clean; therefore the bacteria is not being rinsed away. By drinking water during and in between meals, any food remaining on or around your teeth will be removed.

 

3. Be Aware of Foods that Stain

Watch out for foods such as cranberries and various types of pies like pecan pie. These types of foods can cause dark staining on your teeth. Since they are also sticky, they can leave a residue on your teeth which is difficult to remove.
